Leland D. Melvin
Leland D. Melvin is an aerospace engineer, former NASA astronaut, and children’s book author. Melvin was born in 1959 in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he was raised on his family’s farm. After graduating from high school, Melvin received a full scholarship from the National Science Foundation and attended The University of Richmond. He then went on to get master’s degrees from The Catholic University of America and the University of Virginia, and a doctorate in materials science engineering from The University of Virginia.
Melvin’s career in the aerospace field began in 1986 when he joined NASA’s Langley Research Center, where he was a research engineer focused on airframe specialist and aircraft structures. He fortified his career at NASA by being part of the development of the International Space Station and working on the Space Shuttle Program. In 1998 he was selected as a NASA astronaut, and in 2007 he flew aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis mission as a mission specialist. During his time in space, Melvin conducted experiments with the likes of gyroscopes, robotics, and cameras to better understand the effects of space travel on the human body.
In addition to being an inspiring aerospace engineer and astronaut, Melvin is also an author of children’s books. His first book, “Chasing Space: An Astronaut’s Story Of Grit, Grace, and Second Chances” was published in 2015. This book, which is based on his life’s story, explains how even when faced with challenges, faith, perseverance, and resilience will lead to success. His newest book, “Chasing Places: A Virtual Journey to the Solar System", was released in 2020. It is an interactive book which introduces readers to the wonders of space through vivid illustrations, valuable lessons, and an intergalactic scavenger hunt.
Besides his career accomplishments, Melvin has also been active in promoting STEM education. Through speaking events and leading technology labs, he aims to reduce the “Opportunity Gap” especially among underrepresented youth. He is also involved with initiatives addressing minority involvement in STEM fields, such as being a part of the Capital Area Access to Opportunity for Youth group, and promoting the multimedia literacy skills of African American girls through the Digital D.A.R.E. project.
In recognition of his accomplishments, Melvin has received many awards in various disciplines. Among them, he was named Honorary Humanitarian by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, presented with The 2019 Air, Space and Missile Defense Association’s Polaris Award, and most recently, appointed to the National Air and Space Museum Board of Directors in 2020.
Leland D. Melvin is a shining example of what can be achieved when hard work and determination are applied towards a dream. His accomplishments in the aerospace field and his commitment to improving STEM education through speaking and initiative involvement serve as inspirational guidance for youth and adults alike. His books explore larger-than-life situations and triumphs, giving readers a chance to explore the universe and gain invaluable life lessons through his stories.
