Leonard Mlodinow
Leonard Mlodinow is a renowned physicist and author, who began his writing career in 1988 with his acclaimed book The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives. Drawing on his experience as a physicist, he enjoyed success with his writings, and also collaborated with Stephen Hawking on a number of works.
Mlodinow was born in Chicago in 1954. He began exploring the physical sciences at school, and made a decision to continue along this route upon entering college. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied physics, before heading for Caltech (California Institute of Technology) for his PhD in theoretical physics.
It was during Mlodinow’s PhD studies that he was offered work as a writer for TV series, and he jumped at the chance to try his hand at something new. He began writing scripts for the show MacGuyver, and this experience ultimately led to the writing of his first book. The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives was released in 1988 and was so successful that it earned Mlodinow an invitation to lecture at Caltech.
After completing his thesis in 1993 and becoming a professor of theoretical physics at Caltech, Mlodinow went on to write Feynman’s Rainbow, which was based on Richard Feynman’s unique perspective on theoretical physics and the world of science. This was followed by Euclid's Window in 2002, which was offered as an accessible guide to the science of geometry.
In 2006, Mlodinow wrote the book The Grand Design, in conjunction with Stephen Hawking. The Grand Design is a book exploring the thoughts of the two authors on cosmology and the 'laws of nature' and it was so successful that it became an international bestseller, translated into over 40 languages.
The pair also collaborated on The Grand Designer and The Road to Reality, which was published in 2009 and went on to be dedicated to reading a wider audience. In this work, which was published in six languages and 12 territories, Hawking laid out the processes he used to think about certain problems in physics and cosmology.
In 2010, Mlodinow wrote The Quantum Zebraz and in 2011 he released the book Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Life. In this work, Mlodinow looks explored how the unconscious influences our lives and covers topics such as perception, decision-making, and communication.
In his more recent work, Leonard Mlodinow has sought to explain the implications of recent discoveries in the world of technological advances and design. He aims to use science and technology to help build frameworks for better decision-making, and in 2016 he published The Upright Thinkers, which looks at the development of science since the Renaissance until the present day.
Leonard Mlodinow has established himself as one of the most influential writers in the scientific world, and his continued research and exploration into the mechanics of the world have inspired readers globally. His works continue to generate attention and interest, while also providing readers with an insight into the fascinating and sometimes confusing world of science.
