Lorne A. Whitehead

Lorne A. Whitehead is a renowned Canadian author whose work has been praised for its depth, clarity and accuracy. His writing focuses on the integration of facts and analysis to support his arguments. His writing also includes explorations of science, technology and philosophy.

Whitehead was born in Manitoba in 1956. He earned a bachelor of science in mathematics and physics in 1979, and his master of science in mathematics and physics in 1981, both from the University of Manitoba. He completed his PhD in mathematical physics from the University of Alberta in 1987.

Whitehead has been teaching mathematics and physics since 1980, working at various universities across Canada, including the University of Edmonton, the University of Saskatchewan, and the University of Calgary. He has been teaching at the University of British Columbia since 1990 and is currently a professor of physics and astronomy at the university and director of the Institute of Geophysics and Space Physics.

Whitehead is well-known for his books on a range of topics in physics and mathematics. His first book, Theory of Oscillations: An Introduction, (1996), is a comprehensive introduction to the subject. His second book, Introduction to Fluid Dynamics of Hypersonic Flows (2005), covers the subsonic and supersonic flows in detail. The book has become a classic in the field.

Whitehead’s third book, The Physics of Waves and Oscillations (2015), goes into even more detail on the topics of oscillations, waves and fluids. This book is a comprehensive overview of many topics in the fields of physics, including waves and oscillations, fluid mechanics, acoustics, optics, and thermodynamics. The fourth book, Quantum Mechanics for Novices and Experts (2016), is a unique and comprehensive overview of quantum mechanics for anyone interested in the topic, from undergraduates to professionals.

Whitehead’s latest book, Complex Systems: An Introduction to Biology and Ecology (2020), is an exploration of how complexity emerges in natural systems. Whitehead argues that the dynamics of ecosystems can be viewed as a collection of partly interacting components, each of which influences the others. He provides a range of examples to illustrate his points and offers an intriguing insight into the behaviour of complex systems.

Whitehead has continued to provide his insights into the natural sciences throughout his career, resulting in various magazine and journal articles. He has also been active in the Canadian Association of Physicists, the Canadian Association of Mathematicians, and the Canadian Math Society.

Lorne Whitehead’s work has been praised for its depth, clarity and accuracy. His writing offers a comprehensive overview of a range of topics in physics and mathematics, from introductory to advanced levels, and introduces readers to the fascinating world of complex natural systems. His passion for the natural sciences continues to inspire and has earned him a reputation as one of the leading authorities in physics and mathematics today.
