Maritta Wolff
Maritta Wolff was a pioneering author who wrote several books about her life experiences during World War II. Born in Germany in 1910, Maritta was exposed to the Nazi’s oppressive policies early on in her life. Born to a middle-class family in Germany during the Weimar Republic, Maritta and her two siblings enjoyed a comfortable childhood. That all changed in 1933 when Adolf Hitler's National Socialist German Workers' Party took power. Maritta immediately recognized the terrors this would bring, so she received a number of anonymous calls from a forum to spread the news of what was taking place across Europe. Maritta soon became an active voice in the underground resistance and started helping Jews escape the country.
During the German occupation of Paris in 1940, Maritta and her husband, artist Peter Jorres, relocated. During her time here, Maritta helped to form the Dutch and Belgian underground network The Paratroop Group. This group assisted Dutch and Belgian refugees in escaping from Nazi Europe to Spain, Mexico, and the United States, before they were ultimately arrested and sent into concentration camps. In 1943, Maritta was arrested because of her involvement in the Resistance and was sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp. After her release, Maritta had to travel to many places before being accepted as an American citizen in 1945.
Once in the United States, Maritta settled in California with Peter, and she quickly rose to become a well-known literary figure. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Maritta wrote several books about her life experiences during World War II, combined with her own creative works of fiction. These books have been widely acclaimed and praised for their strong narrative focus, vivid imagery, and emotional depth that transcend all boundaries. Maritta's books provided a first-hand account of a time period often shrouded in mystery, yet give readers a powerful glimpse of what life was like living through it.
