Mark Haddon
Mark Haddon is an acclaimed English author and illustrator best known for his award-winning novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. With a diverse range of works in the genres of fiction, children’s literature, and poetry, Haddon has been making readers both young and old marvel at his masterful storytelling and vivid illustrations.
As a child, Haddon was labeled as “exceptionally bright” by his schoolteachers, as he was promoted to a higher level of studies. Despite this, he chose to pursue a career in the arts upon graduation. After studying English at Oxford University, Haddon earned a job as a graphic designer at a literary magazine and was soon writing for television and radio.
Haddon’s most famous novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, focuses on fifteen-year-old Christopher Boone, who has an autism spectrum disorder. The book was so successful that it won the Whitbread Book Award for best novel of 2003. Haddon’s works often ruminate on difficult topics, such as psychological illness and grief. His other novels include A Spot of Bother, The Red House, and The Pier Falls.
In addition to his career as an author, Haddon is a lauded illustrator. His drawings have appeared in many books and advertising campaigns, and he was involved in the design of the original brand of the popular television show, The IT Crowd.
In addition to speculative fiction, Haddon also writes children’s literature. The first book he wrote for young readers was The Ship’sCat in 2005, an adaptation of a short story he had penned while at Oxford. He also wrote the popular series, Agent Z and the Penguin from Mars. His children’s books exhibit an effortless capacity to capture a child’s imagination, containing vibrant visuals and delightfully strange plots.
Haddon is also a renowned poet, whose works have been published in numerous newspapers and magazines. His poetry deals with issues close to his heart, such as mental illnesses, depression and death.
Haddon’s work continues to win him awards and praise. He has adapted the children’s book The Pier Falls into a play and a short film, and the novel has also won him the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.
