Marshall Rosenberg
Marshall Rosenberg is an internationally renowned author, educator, and organizational psychologist whose works have heavily influenced the fields of psychology and conflict resolution. Born in 1934 in Freehold, New Jersey, Rosenberg attended the University of Wisconsin and earned a Ph.D. in social psychology from the Union for Experimenting Colleges in 1966. Through the 1970s, Rosenberg worked in the areas of education, organizational development, and human service, and began publishing his writings on nonviolent communication in the 1980s.
Rosenberg is best known for his groundbreaking book, Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life, which was originally published in 2003 and has been translated into more than 24 languages. In this book, Rosenberg explores the power of language to transform how we treat one another and how we interact in public settings, such as classrooms, workplaces, and places of worship. He believes that with proper communication skills and a commitment to the nonviolent approach, we can create a more peaceful and harmonious world.
In Nonviolent Communication, Rosenberg outlines specific ways to connect with others and to express feelings, needs, requests, and grievances in a respectful and effective way. He describes four components of communication: observations, feelings, needs, and requests. He also explains how to respectfully disagree and how to mange self-criticism. The concept of seeing and honoring the humanity in all people is central to Rosenberg's teachings, and this is the key to understanding his perspective.
In addition to Nonviolent Communication, Rosenberg has written numerous other books, including Life-Enriching Education, Speak Peace in a World of Conflict, and Empathic Communication. These titles explore the path to establishing harmonious relationships and to building lasting peace through empathy and effective communication.
In recent years, Rosenberg has become increasingly popular among educational professionals, activist groups, and other adult and youth leaders who wish to create a more compassionate society. He has been invited to give lectures and workshops throughout the United States and around the world. His work is widely accepted by social service organizations and faith-based communities, and he continues to touch and shape the lives of many people.
Rosenberg's achievements have been widely recognized. He was awarded the Peace Educator of the Year Award in 2003, the Medal of Honor Award in 2004, and the Global Tolerance Award in 2010. His books, such as Nonviolent Communication, have solidified Rosenberg's place as one of the most influential contemporary authors on conflict resolution and nonviolent communication.
As a renowned author and educator, Rosenberg has provided a valuable source of inspiration to many people around the world. He encourages readers and participants to explore the power of nonviolence and empathy as a way of building harmonious relationships, and to see and honor the humanity in all people. His works have truly revolutionized the fields of psychology and conflict resolution, and may continue to benefit generations to come.
