Matthew D. LaPlante

Matthew D. LaPlante is an American journalist and author, who specializes in science, security, and technology. Much of his writing focuses on the relationship between science and society, environmental stress, and national security. He is the author of the critically acclaimed book, Prophets and Moguls: A Global History of Science, Technology, and Politics.

LaPlante was born in 1981, and grew up in eastern Massachusetts. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied history and Spanish literature. After graduating, LaPlante spent four years in Latin America, working as a journalist and teaching English. He then returned to the United States and earned his master's degree from Mercy College, where he focused on science journalism.

After that, LaPlante joined the university paper of the University of Virginia, where he served as a science and technology journalist. He went on to cover science and other topics for publications such as Newsweek, The Washington Post, and the Associated Press.

In 2019, LaPlante released his debut book, Prophets and Moguls: A Global History of Science, Technology, and Politics. In this book, LaPlante explores how science has had a major influence on our lives, and how technological advances have shaped geopolitics, international relations, and our daily lives. He looks at some of the most influential figures in mastering the natural world, and how their contributions have impacted society at large.

In addition to Prophets and Moguls, LaPlante has also published several articles in top scientific journals and magazines such as Nature, Popular Science, and IEEE Spectrum. His writing has won multiple awards and has been recognized by Academic Earth, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Association of Science Writers.

Besides writing, LaPlante is also a popular speaker. He has been a keynote speaker at various universities, conferences, and workshops around the world.
