Matthew D. Lieberman
Matthew D. Lieberman is an American professor of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He is the author of several books, such as Social: Why Our Brains are Wired to Connect, 2013's The Social Coginitive Brain, and 2015's Social: The New Science of Human Relationships. He is a leading researcher in the field of social cognitive neuroscience and has been published on the topics of emotion, empathy, affect, and self-regulation in numerous scientific journals. Throughout his career, Lieberman has won numerous awards, including being named a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science in 2010 and the Association for Psychological Science's William James Fellow Award for lifetime achievement in 2003.
Lieberman's book Social: Why Our Brains are Wired to Connect examines the different ways in which humans process social information and interact with each other. He draws on evidence from neuroscience, cognitive science, economics, and psychology to support his claims. Lieberman looks at topics like the role of brain-based social behavior, the social brain's development, the role of genetics in our social behavior, and the integration of social memories and emotions. In the book, he discusses many of his own experiments and observations, which help to advance and reinforce his arguments.
The Social Cognitive Brain is Lieberman's book that follows Social: Why Our Brains are Wired to Connect and builds on the concepts introduced in that work. The book delineates the organization of the social brain and its underlying substrates, making a case for understanding how it determines and shapes human behavior. Lieberman's intention is to provide an interdisciplinary look at the interaction between the social cognition brain and social behavior. He looks at topics like the biological basis of emotion, the way in which the human brain processes social information, and the relationship between the social brain and social behavior.
Lieberman's most recent work, Social: The New Science of Human Relationships, focuses on the importance of relationships and social integration as drivers of human behavior. He argues that relationships and socialization are key components in developing a successful and meaningful life. He explores topics such as the power of connection, the neuroscience of empathy, the importance of relationships for health, and the effects of social integration on decision making. He combines evidence from multiple disciplines to form a cohesive view of the complex and far-reaching effects of our relationships on our mental, emotional, and physical health.
Matthew D. Lieberman is a pioneer in the field of social cognitive neuroscience. He has been recognized by multiple organizations for his breakthrough research on the neural mechanisms that underpin social behavior. His books offer a comprehensive look at the science of human relationships, from the role of the brain in social interactions to the power of connections and social integration. In his works, Lieberman draws from both scientific evidence and stories of his own life experiences to illustrate the importance of social connections for a meaningful and successful existence.
