Michael Kremer

Michael Kremer is an accomplished American author whose works have been enjoyed by readers for four decades. He is best known for his children’s fantasy novels, which draw upon classical mythology and folktales to create exciting and relatable adventure stories for young readers. His writing style is both imaginative and accessible, blending humor and simple truths that resonate with readers from all walks of life.

Kremer was born in Ireland but moved to the U.S. as a child. He attended Harvard, where he studied English and philosophy, and then pursued an MFA in creative writing at the University of Iowa. He is an avid reader of literature and has served on the faculty of UMASS-Amherst and the Stonecoast MFA program at the University of Southern Maine.

Kremer’s first published work was a collection of short stories called “Tales from the Moss-Covered Road” (1993). This collection of whimsical and magical tales combined with Kremer’s skillful characterizations and clever dialogue made it an instant hit. Other short stories followed, as well as novels for adults.

Kremer’s most popular works for children include his 1998 fantasy novel “The Silver Creek”, as well as the 2001 Newberry Honor Book “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. The Silver Creek is the story of an 11-year-old girl, Mae, who discovers an enchanted stream in her backyard. With the help of magical creatures, she embarks on an exciting adventure to save the world from an evil force of darkness. “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” is a thrilling murder mystery that retells the classic story. Kremer imbues the tale with his own unique and creative spirit, creating a suspenseful and enthralling read.

Kremer’s more recent works, such as the young adult fantasy novel “The Feral Queen” (2014), “The Talisman of Wyrd” (2016), and “Frosthammer” (2018) show an author whose writing continues to mature, exploring topics such as family dynamics, identity, and responsibility. In 2018, Kremer also wrote “The Journeyman”, an historical fantasy novel set in the 16th century and featuring a teenage alchemist who must master occult forces to save his kingdom and his family.

Kremer is a believer in the power of stories to entertain as well as to teach children important lessons. His work also shows a passion for detail and vivid imagination that is sure to delight and inspire readers young and old. His books, with their memorable characters and thought-provoking messages, remain classics in their own right.
