Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama is one of the most well-known and influential women in the United States today. She has been a driving force behind raising awareness of key issues, has a powerful voice for change and progress, and continues to be an inspiration for many.
A writer, activist and lawyer, Michelle Obama was born in 1964 in Chicago and was raised on the city’s South Side. She graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology, and then went to Harvard Law School where she earned her Juris Doctor degree in 1988.
Throughout her career, Michelle Obama has held several important positions in education, public service and social enterprise. After leaving law practice, she worked in the Chicago Mayor’s office as the Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development. She also served as the Director of the University of Chicago’s Office of Community and External Affairs, and eventually took on a position as the Vice President of Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
From there, Michelle Obama shifted her focus to public service. She served as an advisor to Public Allies and became the founding executive director of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies. Later, she directed the community service program at the University of Chicago Hospitals, before serving as the Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago, where she created the University’s first community service program.
After her husband, Barack Obama, was elected President of the United States in 2008, Michelle Obama became the 44th and first African-American First Lady of the United States. Since then, she has taken a leading role in advocating for health, education, and military families, which earned her the nickname “Mom-in-Chief.”
Michelle Obama has written four bestselling books, including her memoir titled Becoming. Released in 2018, the book shares her early life growing up in Chicago, her journey to college and law school, her career and public service, and then her time as the First Lady of the United States. In Becoming, she offers empowering and inspiring stories on loving yourself and staying true to your values. Additionally, she wrote American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and How Good Food Transforms Our Lives, which offers her vision for improving the quality of kids' diets; and Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters, a book about the values and characteristics that she hopes to instill in her children.
Through her work over the years, Michelle Obama has become an inspiration to many people. From her groundbreaking legacy as the first African-American First Lady of the United States to her activism and writing, Michelle Obama has used her voice to bring attention to and advocate for a variety of important issues, while leading with grace, elegance, and a strong sense of purpose.
