Mimi Sheraton

Mimi Sheraton is an American writer, author and journalist. Much of her work centers on food and travel. She is a world-renowned authority on cuisine and has written several books related to food, most notably The Whole World Loves Chicken Soup: A Book of International Inspiration. Mimi Sheraton has earned recognition from the New York Public Library and the Culinary Institute of America for her work.

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1931, Mimi Sheraton was raised in an upper-middle class family who took great pride in their cuisine. As a young girl, Sheraton spent time in the family kitchen, observing and helping her mother and grandmother make meals. This early fascination with food and cooking motivated her to experiment and refine her craft.

Sheraton ventured into the world of professional writing after she graduated from Sarah Lawrence University in 1952. She wrote for various publications, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and the New York Times. She developed a reputation for her interesting and insightful articles about food, ranging from classics like soul food and French cooking to more obscure fare like Thai and Ethiopian.

In 1974, Sheraton wrote The Whole World Loves Chicken Soup: A Book of International Inspiration. The book was a bestseller and put her name on the map as an authority in the culinary world. In the book, Sheraton guides readers through the ingredients, preparation and flavors of more than 130 chicken soup recipes from around the world.

In addition to her iconic chicken soup book, Mimi Sheraton has over the years written several other books on the subject of food and travel. Her 1991 book From my Mother's kitchen was a personal narrative which traced her culinary adventures around the world. She has also written The German Cookbook (1966), The Key to Chinese Cooking (1980) and Eating My Words: An Appetite for Life (2005).

Apart from writing cook books, Sheraton is also an active critic in the food world. As a reviewer, she has worked for the New York Times, the New York Post and the Village Voice. Her reviews are renowned for their insight, honesty and impartiality.

Mimi Sheraton is also involved in culinary education. She is a frequent speaker at New York University and the Culinary Institute of America and serves on the advisory board for the James Beard Foundation.
