Phil Jackson
Phil Jackson, or "philosophical Jackson," as he has been aptly nicknamed, is an American author, motivational speaker, and former professional basketball coach. He is most famous for leading the Chicago Bulls to six championships during his 11-year tenure. He is equally renowned for being the former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, where he led them to five championships. Further cementing his legacy, Jackson authored the book Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success in 2013, which details his experiences in the NBA and offers lessons on leadership, teamwork, and the power of faith.
Jackson grew up in North Dakota, where his family was deeply rooted in their faith. He attended the University of North Dakota, where he excelled both academically and athletically. After college, he was drafted to play in the NBA but quickly shifted his focus to coaching. He started with the Albany Patroons of the CBA, leading them to the league championship. This earned him a spot as an assistant coach with the Bulls, and in 1989 was named their head coach.
During his time in Chicago, Jackson quickly established himself as one of the most successful coaches in the league and is credited with transforming the Bulls into a dynasty. His coaching tactics were rooted in his Buddhist beliefs and focused on the team’s mental and spiritual strength. He also implemented the famous triangle offense, which emphasizes ball movement and player interaction. Under his leadership, the Bulls won three consecutive championships from 1991 to 1993 and an additional three from 1996 to 1998.
In 1999, Jackson joined the LA Lakers as their head coach, and the organization went on to win five championships during his tenure. Although his coaching style continued to draw from his spiritual beliefs, he also demonstrated excellent leadership skills. His ability to motivate and bring out the best in the team earned him several Coach of the Year awards. As the Lakers continued to dominate the NBA, Jackson took some time out of coaching in 2004 to write Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success.
In the book, Jackson reflects on the lessons he has learned during his Hall of Fame career. He provides anecdotes and stories from his many seasons of coaching and discusses the power of communication, trust, and faith in the locker room. He also offers advice on how to handle stress and distraction, as well as teaching readers how to overcome failure and rebuild after loss. Overall, Eleven Rings is a powerful read about the path to success and achieving one's goals.
For over three decades, Phil Jackson has left his mark on the NBA and on the lives of people all over the world. His dedication, leadership, and spiritual wisdom have enabled him to reach unprecedented heights of success. By reading Eleven Rings, readers can gain insight into the art of coaching and learn the lessons that accompanied his success, and perhaps even pull something they can use in their own lives.
