Ram Dass
Ram Dass (born Richard Alpert in 1931) is an American spiritual teacher, psychologist and author, best known for his books Be Here Now and Remember, Be Here Now. Over the years, he has been influential in introducing the concepts of Eastern spirituality to the Western world.
Ram Dass was born in Newton, Massachusetts, into an upper-middle-class Jewish family and was an honors student in college. He received his Ph.D. in psychology at Stanford University and taught experimental psychology at Harvard, where he worked with famed psychologist Timothy Leary.
He became interested in the exploration of mind and consciousness and conducted research in the field of psychedelic drugs. He and Leary conducted the famous Harvard Psilocybin Project, in which they studied how hallucinogenic drugs such as mescaline and psilocybin could be used to alter consciousness and explore the human mind.
In 1967, Ram Dass experienced a life-changing event when he visited India and encountered the Hindu guru Neem Karoli Baba. After two weeks traveling with the guru, Ram Dass experienced a spiritual awakening that he would later describe as a "trip to the soul.β
In the early 1970s he wrote and published the hugely influential book Be Here Now, which became a bestseller. The book explored spiritual paths, meditation, psychedelics and service, and offered a unique perspective on spiritual awareness and transformation.
In addition to writing, Ram Dass has been active in spiritual teaching in the West. He has given lectures and taught workshops in various spiritual traditions, as well as in his own time exploring various tools and paths to higher consciousness.
He also wrote and published the book Remember, Be Here Now in 1971 which is one of his most popular works. In this book, Ram Dass explores the spiritual traditions of the East, the use of psychedelics, his own spiritual journey and the steps taken on the spiritual path.
Ram Dass has remained a presence in the world of spirituality and personal transformation for decades. He has given talks at conferences, spiritual retreats, and workshops .His books have been influential in the spiritual world, and his teachings continue to be studied and explored.
