Rana Foroohar is a financial columnist, author, and market analyst known for her contributions to Time and both her popular and influential books. She has drawn praise and attention for her work challenging the global economic order, exploring the human and economic effects of technology, and outlining solutions to the array of economic problems that have arisen in recent years.

Born in West Virginia in 1972, Foroohar graduated from the University of Virginia and Yale University, receiving postgraduate degrees in International Relations and, Journalism respectively. In her early career, she wrote for publications including Newsweek and Dow Jones, and was the German and Swiss Bureau Chief for Fortune from 2002-2009.

In April 2009, Foroohar joined Time Magazine as an associate editor and economics columnist, becoming the business and economics editor in 2011. As a columnist, Foroohar has written on myriad topics related to the global economy, and has had particular success in investigating and writing about financial scandals, technology’s influence on the economy, and the economic and social issues resulting from economic inequality.

Rather than simply cataloguing economic issues and unsuccessful solutions, however, Foroohar is seen to present unique ideas and theory. In both her popular articles and her books, she proposes solutions to problems ranging from supporting small businesses to redistributing global wealth. Moreover, Foroohar also focuses on humanizing economic topics, often exploring the personal stories of individuals affected by economic trends or policies. In 2017, she published a book on these topics called ‘Makers and Takers’.

In addition to her work at Time Magazine, Foroohar has made frequent appearances on television networks such as CNBC, MSNBC and Fox discussing international financial topics from the 2008 crisis to the European Union and more. In addition to her writing and broadcasting, she has also acted as an advisor for the World Economic Forum, Citigroup and TEDx, and as a consultant for Allen & Company and Goldman Sachs.

Due to her success, Foroohar has earned recognition in the form of multiple awards, including being named a ‘Young Global Leader’ by the World Economic Forum, as well as being a Department of State 'female empowerment' speaker. In addition, she was named on the ‘50 Smartest People in Tech’ list in 2014, and received the International Women's Media Foundation's Courage in Journalism Award in 2015.
