Renée Mauborgne

Renée Mauborgne is a world-renowned business strategist, management professor, and author. She is co-author of the best-selling books Blue Ocean Strategy, Beyond Competition, and Blue Ocean Shift, all of which have gained international recognition and acclaim in the business world.

Mauborgne is a professor at INSEAD, one of the world’s leading business schools, where she teaches strategy and leadership courses. She is also a keynote speaker, having spoken at conferences for corporate, government, and academic audiences in more than 30 countries.

Mauborgne’s career began in the early 1990s when she joined the consulting firm McKinsey & Company. During her time there, she drove the creation of Enterprise-Wide Transformation, one of McKinsey’s leading practices. She then joined the faculty of INSEAD, eventually becoming the school’s first female dean.

Renée Mauborgne’s most well-known work is Blue Ocean Strategy, co-authored with W. Chan Kim in 2004. The book argues that companies should seek out new markets and uncontested business areas — or “blue oceans” — rather than competing in existing ones. The strategy is based on a four-step analytical framework called “the four actions framework” which provides a system for businesses to assess their competitive environment, rethink their business model, and create new markets and opportunities.

Blue Ocean Strategy has sold over 3 million copies worldwide, has been translated into 40 languages, and has been used by a wide range of organizations, from Fortune 500 members to small businesses and entrepreneurs. The book has won numerous awards and has been heavily cited in the business world.

While Blue Ocean Strategy was Mauborgne’s first foray into business strategy, she has also authored two additional books in the Blue Ocean brand. The first, Beyond Competition, which she co-authored with Kim in 2011, builds upon the ideas of Blue Ocean Strategy and provides business leaders with an expanded perspective on competition and marketing. The second, Blue Ocean Shift, was published in 2017 and outlines an 8-step practical framework for achieving successful and lasting change. Both books have been widely praised for their clarity and actionable insights.

The central theme of Mauborgne’s work is to provide businesses with the tools and strategies to achieve success in today’s ever-changing world. She has been acclaimed for her groundbreaking ideas and inspiring journey from professor to best-selling author — a journey which has left an indelible mark on business strategy. Her books and speaking engagements have left a significant impact on business leaders and entrepreneurs around the world, helping to change the way businesses think and operate.
