Richard Koch

Richard Koch is a well-known author, consultant, and investor. He is best known for his books on business and entrepreneurship, which have become popular among a broad audience. His works focus on the application of psychological principles to business management, with a strong emphasis on the power of simplicity. Seemingly contradictory solutions to business problems form the cornerstone of Koch’s work, and he often refutes traditional business advice with his own brand of counterintuitive business strategies.

Koch was born near London in 1949 and attended the University of Oxford, where he studied Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. After graduating in 1971, he began consulting for various multinational corporations. Koch became interested in the psychology of management, which he viewed as the key to unlock value creation within businesses. This led him to write an influential book, The 80/20 Principle (1998), which was based on the “Pareto” principle of optimal resource allocation. Through this book, Koch popularized an understanding of the power of the “80/20 Rule,” which holds that 80% of the results come from 20% of the effort.

Following the success of The 80/20 Principle, Koch wrote his second book, Simplify (2005). In this work, Koch sought to simplify life and business decisions. He set out the “essential choice concept,” calling for decisions to be made on the basis of “quality per unit of effort.” Building on the 80/20 Rule, Koch argued that most decisions can be simplified when weighed against the potential gains and losses.

In 2007, Koch produced The Star Principle (2007), which examined the method by which successful companies sustain their success. He argued that the “Star Principle” could be applied to problem-solving, decision-making, and resource allocation. The Star Principle defines success as an ongoing process of mastery, rather than the one-time accomplishment of a certain task.

Inspired by his consulting experience, Koch wrote The Investors Manifesto (2009). In it, he emphasized the importance of making good investment decisions by balancing “the risk of getting it wrong” with the possibility of “getting it right.” He proposed that successful investors need to accept a certain level of risk, but use their knowledge and experience to minimize losses in the long run.

In 2014, Koch released a follow-up to The 80/20 Principle entitled The 80/20 Revolution (2014). The book calls for an overhaul of conventional business models, replacing linear progressions with a more efficient, “80/20” approach. By expanding the application of the 80/20 Rule to all aspects of business, he argued that firms could achieve greater results through fewer resources, allowing them to become more competitive in the market.

Koch’s latest book, The Laws of Wealth (2018), draws upon his lifetime of experience in business and investing to provide readers with advice. The book summarizes the main points of his previous works, while making the case that “the laws of wealth” are immutable and the main determinants of long-term success in business and investing.

Throughout his career, Richard Koch has offered readers a contrarian approach to business and investing. His books have been read by millions, helping to educate a broad audience about the principles of business and investment. His emphasis on the power of simplicity encourages entrepreneurs and investors alike to focus on small, achievable goals, rather than trying to achieve everything at once. Koch has undoubtedly earned his place among the most influential business authors of our time.
