Richard P. Rumelt

Richard P. Rumelt is an American professor and author in the field of strategic management. He has written several seminal books on the subject, including Strategy, Good Strategy, Bad Strategy, and The Essential Rumelt: Selections from Thirty Years of Writings on Strategy.

Rumelt earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1967 and obtained his MA in Political Science in 1972 and his Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University in 1975. He began his career teaching at Harvard, which included a position as acting director of the Harvard Business School’s Strategy program in 1975.

Since 1978, Rumelt has been a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has also been a visiting professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a visiting scholar at the Harvard Business School. In 2006, he was named a Distinguished Professor in Strategy at the UCLA Anderson School of Management.
