Rob Salkowitz
Rob Salkowitz is a New York Times bestselling author and media consultant that has made a lasting legacy in the publishing industry. He’s written multiple books about marketing, media, and technology, including his most well-known work, the critically acclaimed comic book fan guide, Comic-Con and the Business of Pop Culture.
Born in Texas, Salkowitz grew up with a passion for comics and comic book culture. He was a regular at comic conventions during the early '90s and kept up with the latest comic-book news. Salkowitz eventually went on to pursue an undergraduate degree in English at the University of Colorado-Boulder, where he refined his writing skills. After college, he obtained a master's degree in communications from the prestigious Northwestern University in Chicago. Soon after, he started a career in writing and consulting.
One of Salkowitz’s early successes was writing for the now-defunct Comic Book Resources website. He founded the CBR analysis blog, which provided his personal perspective on the politics and economics of comic book publishing. While running the blog, Salkowitz was also writing about comic books for The Washington Post and other mainstream news outlets.
Salkowitz’s career skyrocketed when he released his first book, Comic-Con and the Business of Pop Culture, in 2012. In the book, Salkowitz covers the history of the hugely popular comic convention, as well as its rise in popularity and its potential future. The book also examines the business opportunities that have cropped up as a result of the Comic Con trend and the impact the event has had on the surrounding industry.
Following the success of his first book, Salkowitz continued to write, often exploring the politics, economics, and technology of the media industry. His 2015 book, Young World Rising: How Youth, Technology, and Entrepreneurship are Changing the World from the Bottom Up, looks at how internet-savvy Gen-Y and Gen-Z entrepreneurs can disrupt tradition and create new opportunities for economic and social prosperity.
Salkowitz’s 2018 work, Gen Z Conspiracy: How The Internet Is Transforming Popular Conspiracies into Change for the Better, is a deep dive into the world of conspiracy theory and the power of social media to spread these beliefs. By examining how these trends can influence the policy of governments, the book argues that these crazes do not have to resort to violence to create significant change.
Salkowitz has also authored several paperbacks. ComicCon Revolution: Celebrating and Transforming Pop Culture looks at the way Comic Con transformed popular culture, while Fanocracy: Harnessing the Power of Fan Culture to Build something Remarkable examines the ways in which fan culture can be used to create unique and lasting experiences.
Rob Salkowitz is a pioneering thinker who is always looking to the future. His informative books provide an invaluable insight into the complex and fascinating business, technology, and media industry. He continues to influence the conversation in this ever-changing industry, inspiring generations of entrepreneurs, marketers and publishers.
