Johnson was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1935 and grew up in Lockport, New York. He attended Colgate University, where he majored in philosophy, and then he went on to obtain his master's degree from the Union Theological Seminary in New York. Johnson also attended Heidelberg University in Germany and was strongly influenced by his studies of existentialism, Jungian psychology, and Eastern mysticism.

In 1966, Robert Johnson co-authored Modem Man in Search of a Soul with psychoanalyst Carl Jung. This was the first book to introduce Jung's psychological theories to a mainstream audience. The book was met with critical acclaim, and Johnson continued to build upon his success by writing more than a dozen books on various aspects of spirituality and personal growth.

Johnson's works generally focus on the psychological and spiritual aspects of life. His first major work, Inner Work (1986), discussed the potential spiritual growth that can come from introverted personality types and featured Jungian-inspired theories, such as individuation and the collective unconscious. Other works, such as Transformation (1992) and We: Understanding the Psychology of Romantic Love (1988) , build upon this theme by looking at the power of relationships and how our emotional and spiritual needs can be satisfied through them.

Throughout his works, Johnson draws from many varied traditions and schools of thought, from ancient mythology to theories from mythology to psychology, anthropology, and quantum physics. He is highly regarded for his ability to weave together ideas from different disciplines and integrate them into a cohesive argument.

Johnson's books have become immensely popular due to the relative ease with which he communicates his ideas. His writing style is remarkably accessible, allowing him to reach out to readers of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs. The unique blend of his various interests and disciplines make his work particularly resonating. His books have been translated into over twenty languages, and there have been dozens of editions printed.

In addition to writing books, Robert Johnson also conducts workshops and seminars as an adjunct professor at Union Theological Seminary and University of Minnesota Medical School. He has successfully imparted his knowledge and psychological theories in lectures and has often been asked to serve as a workshop moderator for various conferences.
