A native of Butler, Missouri, Heinlein was born July 7, 1907 to Rex and Bam Lyle Heinlein. Though his parents divorced in 1924, Heinlein was blessed with a supportive biological father and a foster father. He attended public school, completing his high school education at the age of sixteen. He later studied at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, graduating in 1929. After serving in the navy for five years, Heinlein retired in 1934 and began a career as a civilian aircraft engineer at the Glenn L. Martin Company.
Heinlein's first published work of science fiction was the short story "Life-Line," released in 1939 in the magazine Astounding Science Fiction. The book told the story of three boys and a scientist who build a rocket and take a daring journey to the moon.
In the 1950s, Heinlein developed and expanded his classic science fiction themes in stories such as The Puppet Masters and Stranger in a Strange Land. He continued to write throughout the 1960s, producing works such as Have Space Suit—Will Travel and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. These stories explored more mature themes of human nature and technological advancement, and cemented Heinlein’s place as one of the foremost authors of science fiction.

His books addressed a wide range of topics, such as civil disobedience, the future of mankind, and women's rights. His work has inspired generations of authors and readers, and has been adapted into films, television series, and stage plays.
Though Heinlein passed away in 1988, his influence is still felt today in the works of authors such as Arthur C. Clarke and Ray Bradbury.
