Robert Ryan
Robert Ryan is a prolific and multi-award nominated author who has penned several must-read works. He is particularly acclaimed for his science-fiction works, which have been adapted into multiple award-winning dramas, video games, and comics. Born in 1964 in Santa Monica, California, Ryan's interest in writing was sparked at an early age as he spent hours reading classic science-fiction novels by authors such as H.G. Wells and Isaac Asimov. This passion for the genre would lead him to pen his own science-fiction stories and create some of the most acclaimed works of his generation.
Ryan started his writing career working for popular children’s magazines such as Highlights for Children, which published his first works in the late 1980s. He made a name for himself with his writing for celebrated magazines such as Science Fiction Age, Tales from the Crypt, and The Twilight Zone Magazine. This led to Ryan's first book publication in 1996, the horror novel The River, which was published to critical acclaim and went on to become an international bestseller.
Ryan wrote more work in the horror genre including the sequels to The River, Ghosts of Yesterday and The Reaping, before tackling a more ambitious project: the science-fiction series The Darkworld Saga. This series was a tour-de-force of futuristic storytelling and depicted an interstellar conflict between multiple species in a distant future. The series was a hit among readers and won Ryan multiple awards, including the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for best new science fiction novel of the year.
Following the success of The Darkworld Saga, Ryan launched into a series of science-fiction projects that tackled a wide range of topics and ideas. His first novel in this period, Spacewreck (1999), was a post-apocalyptic adventure about a salvage crew stuck in a distant and dangerous part of space. He followed this up with titles such as The Origami Code (2002), a space opera thriller, and The Artificial Assassin (2004), a science-fiction murder mystery. All of these works showcased Ryan's linguistic wit and science-fiction world crafting, making him one of the brightest stars of the genre.
Outside of fiction writing, Ryan has had a successful career as a scriptwriter, contributing to popular TV Shows such as Babylon 5 and Angel. He has also written and published several comic books, most notably the acclaimed Image Comics series, The Theory of Everything.
Today, Ryan is considered to be one of the giants of the science fiction genre.
