Roy Peter Clark
Roy Peter Clark is one of America’s premier writing teachers and a master of the craft of writing. His books have inspired generations of students, and his innovative methods have helped countless authors improve their writing.
A Tampa, Florida native, Roy Peter Clark earned a BA in English from Florida State University and a PhD in English from Northwestern University. He entered academia as an English professor before transitioning to journalism as a professor at the Poynter Institute, an organization devoted to educating journalists around the world.
At the Institute, Roy Peter Clark established the National Writing Project and developed the writing program Writing Remedies. He also pioneered the teaching of writing as a "habit of mind" and sought to eliminate the traditional form of grammar lessons. His writing program focused on sentence structure, clarity and precision. This program would eventually become Writing With Power, the book that has become a classic among writers and writing teachers.
In addition to Writing With Power, Roy Peter Clark has a number of other books to his name, including The Glamour of Grammar and How to Write Short: Word Craft for Fast Times. He also co-authored the book Write it When I'm Gone: Advice and Lessons from Mom, with his mother.
