Ellis was born in Walla Walla, Washington, into a culturally mixed family. He was raised in both rural parts of the state and urban settings, which has deeply affected his writing style and choice topics upon which to base his stories. A self-described voracious reader, Ellis developed an avid interest in literature and science fiction at an early age.

He attended Pacific Lutheran University, where he earned a degree in English and creative writing, and then successfully pursued a variety of writing jobs over the years, including long-form journalism and short stories. This led to a sequel, Last Light, which further developed the characters and brought more depth to the overall story arc.

In subsequent books, Ellis continued to deliver innovative storylines, such as Indigo, a science fiction thriller about a biotech company that discovers a drug that can shut down the brain’s pleasure centers, resulting in an epidemic of reckless behavior. In 2020, he released Eucharist, which is set in a dystopian future where water has become scarce and precious moments of beauty and joy are treated as commodities.

The success of Ellis’s writing is rooted in his gift to draw on a range of observations and experiences to vividly craft complex and complex stories.
