Sebastian Mallaby
Sebastian Mallaby is an award-winning British journalist and author. His work has appeared in a variety of publications and he is the author of six books, including his latest, The Man Who Knew: The Life and Times of Alan Greenspan. He has also been a contributing editor at The Economist magazine since 1992.
Mallaby was born in 1966 and grew up in England. He attended Queen's College, Oxford and graduated with a degree in history and economics. After university, he began his career as a journalist and moved to South Africa in 1989. Here, he reported on the collapse of apartheid.
Mallaby's first book, After Apartheid: The Future of South Africa, was published in 1993 and focused on the country’s transformation to democracy and its struggle with poverty. This book won several awards, including the 1993 National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction.
Mallaby then returned to the UK, where he published two more books. The first, More Money Than God: Hedge Funds and the Making of a New Elite, was published in 2010 to international acclaim. It was a comprehensive look at the history of hedge funds, their creation of a new breed of investment and their impact on the global economy. The book won the 2011 Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year award.
In 2012, Mallaby moved to Washington, DC where he wrote his fourth book, The Confidence Men: Wall Street, Washington and the Education of a President. This critically acclaimed book followed the Obama administration’s economic recovery efforts and provided an in-depth look at how recent economic crises were handled. This book won the 2012 Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year award.
Mallaby's fifth book, The Man Who Knew: The Life and Times of Alan Greenspan, was published in 2016 and offered a look at the long and storied career of former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan. It provided an in-depth exploration of Greenspan's role in the creation of the modern financial world, from the collapse of the Soviet Union to his time as head of the Federal Reserve. The book was described by the Washington Post as “a sweeping and comprehensive portrait of the man and his times” and won the 2017 Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year award.
Mallaby's latest book, The Only Game in Town: Central Banks, Instability, and Avoiding the Next Collapse, was published in 2020. It is a comprehensive look at the role of central banks in preventing and managing global economic crises. It offers innovative solutions for maintaining the global stability of the markets and avoiding systemic financial collapse.
