Seth Price

The American conceptual artist, writer, and film director, Seth Price, has gained recognition for his work across many different mediums, intertwined with technology and style.

Price was born in 1973 in East Jerusalem, Israel, during times of civil unrest to an American Christian family. Despite growing up in tumultuous circumstances, Price graduated from the liberal arts college Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and then proceeded to obtain an MFA from Bard College in New York.

Price's artwork clearly reflects his experience of growing up in an unstable environment, as well as his inner feelings, identity and beliefs.

Price is known for his thought-provoking pieces that have made him one of the most significant artists of his time. His works challenge traditional concepts of beauty, with multifaceted aspects melding different cultural references. In the words of Price himself, he is looking to “produce cultural objects that reflect who we are today”.

Price's artwork spans diverse mediums from visual to performance, from sculpture to video installation. His works often challenge larger, more conventional themes in art. In his pieces, Price explores elements of globalization and technology, as he has said “I like to purposefully smash together tropes from different media cultures and artistic moments”.

Price has also written extensively on art theory. His critiques have been published in Artforum and Art in America. His major work, Redistribution, hovers around his own written works, as he explores mass culture and the concept of value. Additionally, he has written and directed the film, Disassembly, which researches the meaning of documentary and the idea of absence.

Price has also exhibited his work in various venues such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA PS1, and The New Museum.

In 2011, Price's piece Disassembly was included in the Whitney Biennial that included pieces by some of the most contemporary art stars, like John Bock and Keren Cytter. In the same year, Redistribution was essential to his prestigious ‘Radical Male’ show in Cologne, Germany.

The art of Seth Price is a journey of human emotions, exploring how meaning and mediums interconnect with each other. His work reflects a significant shift in contemporary art, with Price at the helm of its transformation. His works entice audiences with emotional consciousness, successfully reflecting what we fear, feel and gain from the current times we live in.
