Shunryu Suzuki

Shunryu Suzuki was a renowned Zen master and author who wrote numerous books about Zen practice and Buddhism. Born in 1904 in Kanazawa, Japan, Suzuki was ordained a Sōtō Zen priest at the age of 23 and eventually studied Zen Buddhism in Japan and the United States.

In 1959, he moved to San Francisco, California at the request of Japanese American Zen Buddhists. Here, he founded the San Francisco Zen Center and taught students who were interested in meditation and Zen practice. His teachings were heavily influenced by Japanese Zen Buddhism, but he incorporated aspects of Western culture into his teachings which resonated with his American students.

His most famous work is the book “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind”, which emphasizes the importance of mindfulness and awakening to the present moment. In the book, Suzuki proposes a way of being in which one can remain aware of the environment and their own inner workings minute-to-minute. He also encourages readers to take part in activities such as Zazen (Zen meditation) in order to reach this level of consciousness. Furthermore, he stresses the importance of letting go of any preconceived notions in order to achieve a full understanding of any given situation.

Suzuki’s other works are also quite famous, including “Zen Mind, Everyday Mind”, “The Zen Way of Life”, and “Zen Edition of the Bible Studied from a Zen Perspective.” These works are extremely insightful and provide an important guide for readers who are looking to make sense of aspects of the world around them.
