Stephen B. Oates is one of the foremost American authors writing about history. Well known for his biographical works, Stephen B. Oates has dedicated himself to the accurate preservation and portrayal of important historical figures and events.

Stephen B. Oates was born in 1927 in Portsmith, Ohio and raised in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He graduated from Ohio University in 1951, and went on to earn a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1955 and a doctorate from the University of Virginia in 1960.

In 1965, Stephen B. Oates published his first book, The Fires of Jubilee: Nat Turner's Fierce Rebellion, which detailed thetrue-life events of Nat Turner's insurrection. This book soon earned Stephen B. Oates his place as a prominent historian author. Building on the success of this work, Stephen B. Oates went on to write many more books, including biographies of major historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and John Brown. Stephen B. Oates' writing style is well known for its fairness and balanced approach to topics. Even in writing biographies, he strives to present the subjects in as balanced of a manner as possible.

In addition to his writing, Stephen B. Oates has also been an active participant in educational institutions. He has worked as a professor at a number of universities, including the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Amherst College, the University of Connecticut, the University of Georgia, and the University of Texas. Stephen B. Oates has written several textbooks for use in high school and college courses, including his famous textbook, To Purge This Land With Blood, about the Civil War. He also had a long-standing relationship with The Teaching Company, where he recorded audio courses discussing the accomplishments of great figures from history.

Some of Stephen B. Oates' most well-known works include his Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Abraham Lincoln, With Malice Toward None. This book is widely acknowledged as the definitive work on the life of the United States' 16th president. He has also written biographies of John Brown, the radical civil rights activist based on abolitionism, titled The Muste of John Brown, as well as Let the Trumpet Sound: The Life of Martin Luther King Jr., in 1982. Stephen B. Oates wrote and published his latest work, A Gathering of Eagles, in 2019.

Today, Stephen B. Oates is still active as a scholar and a writer. An emeritus professor at University of Massachusetts Amherst, Stephen B.
