Steve Berez
Steve Berez is a Canadian author of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and other speculative fiction genres. His novels, novellas, and short stories have been published diversed sources including TOR Books, Apex Magazine, and Lovecraft eZine. He is best known for his series The Ironwatch Chronicles, a space-fantasy epic set in a far-future universe of warring aliens and humans.
Born in Kingston, Ontario, Berez studied computer science at the University of Toronto and media studies at Ryerson University. He has always been passionate about storytelling and the written word and began writing fiction in 2008. Berez has said that his goal as an author is to “tell entertaining, imaginative stories that make the reader think and feel.”
Berez’s debut novel, The Ironwatch Chronicles: The Iron Angels, was published in 2011 by TOR Books. The series has since expanded to include four full novels and one novella, as well as a collection of short stories. The novels are set in the far future, on the planet Eshara. The Ironwatch Chronicles tells the story of a war between human-led superpowers and an alliance of alien civilizations. Berez’s stories are full of action, adventure, and romance set against an expansive, compelling universe.
Berez has also written several horror and dark fantasy stories, including the novella Into the Cold Darkness, which was published by Apex Magazine in 2016. His stories often blend elements of horror and science fiction, utilizing alien beasts and cosmic horror to craft a tense and suspenseful atmosphere. In addition to his novels and novellas, Berez has also written several short stories, many of which have won awards or been included in “best of” anthologies.
In addition to writing, Berez has also been involved in various events and conventions related to the speculative fiction community. He was the creator and organizer of Toronto’s all-fiction convention Spectralight in 2019 and 2020, as well as a guest of honor at several conventions in the US, Canada, and Australia.
Berez continues to be an active presence in the science fiction and fantasy community. In addition to writing fiction, he is also active as a lecturer, panelist, and contest judge at various conventions and events. His primary goal is still to “tell entertaining, imaginative stories that make the reader think and feel.” He has proven to be a prolific and talented author and is sure to continue entertaining readers with his imaginative stories for years to come.
