Steve Yarbrough
Steve Yarbrough is one of the most successful literary authors today, with numerous books and stories published over the span of his career. From his award-winning novels, to the shorter stories and novellas, Yarbrough’s impact in fiction has left its mark on countless readers around the world.
Yarbrough grew up in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and after graduating from high school he attended the University of Mississippi to study English. He then moved on to the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned an MBA. When he returned to Mississippi he began teaching at Delta State University and running a small advertising agency with a friend.
It was during this time that Yarbrough’s writing career began to take off. His first book, Prisoners of War, was published by Simon & Schuster in 1992. The novel follows the story of an affluent family in Mississippi whose efforts to overcome the racial barriers of their time are challenged when their father is arrested and sent to prison in Vietnam. The novel was an instant success and earned a Robert Penn Warren Award.
In the years that followed, Yarbrough continued to write and publish award-winning books. His 1998 novel, Visible Spirits, won the Southern Writers Guild Fiction Award and was later turned into a movie in 2003. Yarbrough’s other works include The Oxygen Man, The End of California, and Veneer, which was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.
In addition to novels, Yarbrough also writes short stories and novellas. His stories have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, including The New Yorker, Granta, and Harper’s Magazine. His novella, The End of California, was included in the O Henry Prize Stories in 2005.
Yarbrough’s writing has often explored Southern and Midwestern culture, with a particular focus on race, class, and family. He often mixes Southern and Midwestern settings, giving a realistic and detailed picture of the struggles that are faced by individuals and families, regardless of social or economic status.
