T. Colin Campbell is a name that every nutrition student should be familiar with. Dr. Campbell is an American biochemist who has devoted his life to helping others eat healthily and live healthier lifestyles. He is the author of The China Study, the most comprehensive study ever done on nutrition, which has been hailed as "the Grand Prix of Epidemiology”. As well as that, he has written a number of other books which explore and promote a vegetarian diet, as well as address important issues in nutrition such as disease prevention, sustenance production and sustainability.
Ever since completing his undergraduate studies at Pennsylvania State University in 1956, T. Colin Campbell has dedicated his career to biochemistry and nutrition science. He received his master’s degree from Cornell University in 1958, before finally receiving his doctorate from Cornell four years later. In the following years, he would go on to work as a research associate at MIT, an associate professor at Virginia Tech and eventually a professor at Cornell University.
It is Dr. Campbell’s monumental work on nutrigenomics, at Cornell University, that he is best known for. Essentially, nutrigenomics is the study of how various foods interact with the genetic components of our bodies and how they positively or negatively affect our health and wellbeing. Dr. Campbell conducted decades of research on the subject and then compiled his findings in his 2007 book on the topic, The China Study. It is the most comprehensive study ever done of its kind and is credited with revolutionizing the diet and nutrition industry.
In The China Study, Dr. Campbell puts forth the argument that the fatty-acid profile of an omnivorous diet contributes to the development of chronic diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. He suggests that a plant-based diet is the most beneficial in terms of health. He also notes that a vegetarian diet is not only healthier, but is also more sustainable and requires less resources in regards to production.
Since the release of The China Study, Dr. Campbell has written a number of other books exploring the benefits of plant-based diets. These books include Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition and The Low-Carb Fraud. He also authored the book The China Study Solution: Eat Whole, Plant-Based Foods for Optimal Health. All of these works promote a vegetarian diet and provide an evidence-based approach to achieving optimal health.
In conclusion, T. Colin Campbell is an internationally renowned biochemist, devoted to improving the lives of others through healthy nutrition. Throughout his life, he has conducted numerous studies and released several books which promote the benefits of a plant-based diet. His efforts have pushed the boundaries of traditional diets and have resulted in numerous studies confirming the positive effects of a vegetarian lifestyle.
