Thomas Cathcart
Thomas Cathcart is an American journalist, author, and comedian who is known for his witty and entertaining books about philosophy and the complexities of life. He has written five books, which have received critical acclaim and sold hundreds of thousands of copies around the world.
Thomas Cathcart was born in New York City in 1948. He attended Lehigh University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy, and then went on to pursue a career in journalism. He worked as a writer and editor at the New York Times, eventually becoming a prize-winning investigative reporter. After a successful journalism career, Thomas decided to pursue his lifelong passion for philosophy, which led him to writing books.
Thomas Cathcart's first book, “The Tao of Humor”, was published in 1997 and was an instant success. His unique blend of wisdom, wit and humor was a refreshing change from the seriousness of the philosophical literature of the time. In the book, Cathcart examines the importance of our laughter-- why we laugh, where it comes from, and how it affects our lives. In addition, he explores the various types of humor, from the wit of Socrates and the sarcasm of Nietzsche to the deadpan delivery of Steve Martin, and how we can use humor to make sense of ourselves and our surroundings.
Following the success of “The Tao of Humor”, Cathcart wrote two more books, “Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar” and “Heidegger and a Hippo Walk through Those Pearly Gates”. These two lively and informative books explore the great philosophical thinkers of the past, from Plato to Heidegger, by using their ideas as a starting point to explore some of the biggest questions in life. Cathcart also examines how their ideas continue to impact our lives today.
Thomas Cathcart's most recent book is titled “The Trinity and the Spectral Metaphor”. In this book, he attempts to explain the complexities of the Trinity — a subject which has occupied religious minds for centuries and one which modern science cannot fully explain — in an accessible and humorous way. Through this book, Cathcart reveals the power of the Trinity to reveal why the universe and all that exists in it continues to puzzle us.
In addition to his books, Thomas Cathcart is known for his contributions to “The Moth Radio Hour”, a popular public radio show where he performs humorous monologues about life and philosophy. He is also a contributing writer for “The New Yorker”, where he writes about philosophy, science, and culture.
Since his first book was published in 1997, Thomas Cathcart has become a popular author and philosopher. He is widely admired for his wit and humor, which he routinely injects into his philosophical explorations. He continues to write and publish books, as well as contribute to the Moth Radio Hour and The New Yorker, and is an inspiring example of the power of humor and philosophy to bring insight into the complexities of life.
