Tim Marshall is an accomplished author, journalist, and political analyst. He has written two New York Times best-sellers, ‘Prisoners of Geography: Ten Maps That Explain Everything About the World’ and ‘Border Wars: Inside Trump’s Assault On Immigration’, and appeared on multiple media outlets across the political spectrum.
Marshall began his career as a journalist, working for BBC Central and East Europe as a reporter and presenter in the early 1990s. After a brief stint as a producer for BBC Worldwide, he moved on to Global Radio News as a reporter, broadcaster and political analyst. The BBC approached him in 2001 and recruited him to present their flagship program ‘Tonight with Jonathan Dimbleby’.
Marshall quickly rose to prominence as a leading political commentator and his career led him to work with a variety of news outlets, including the BBC and Sky News. In addition to his reporting and presenting, he regularly contributed to the Guardian, Sunday Times, and Sunday Telegraph newspapers. He also travelled extensively as an author and was a speaker at the Oxford Union, Chatham House, and Stanford University.
Marshall’s first book, 'Prisoners of Geography: Ten Maps That Explain Everything About the World' was released in 2015 and has since become one of the most popular geography books of all time. The premise of the book is to explain the world’s geopolitics and economics through ten maps, with each map drawing on history and facts to offer a snapshot of a specific region. The book provides readers with a unique insight into the political, geographic, and economic issues that have shaped our world.
His second book, 'Border Wars: Inside Trump’s Assault On Immigration' was published in 2020 and was an instant hit. In this book, Marshall takes a closer look at the political crisis in the US surrounding the Trump administration’s policies on immigration. In ‘Border Wars’ Marshall interviews key actors on both sides of the debate, including the Trump administration, civil rights lawyers and advocates, border agents, and the people they affect. He delves into the nuances of the policies and paints a vivid picture of what life is like on the border in present-day America.
When he’s not writing or reporting, Marshall is a fervent supporter of rights for refugees and asylum seekers and regularly speaks out on their behalf.
Tim Marshall is an inspiring writer and journalist who has gained recognition for his in-depth and thought-provoking books on geopolitics and current affairs. His works have helped to draw attention to important matters, whilst providing readers with an interesting and accessible perspective on global issues. It’ll be interesting to see what he turns his attention to next.
