Tom Griffiths

Tom Griffiths is an award-winning Australian author of multiple works of fiction and nonfiction. His books span a variety of genres and have received glowing reviews from readers and critics alike. He is best known for his historical fiction, ranging from the 1820s to 1930s, but also writes about contemporary issues, social justice and sustainable living.

Tom Griffiths was born in Melbourne in 1966. He began his career as a journalist and writer, writing everything from short stories to feature articles for various publications. At the same time, he started the first editorial unit within Amnesty International, working to raise awareness of human rights violations.

In 1993, Tom Griffiths released his first book, The Cool Rules, a collection of short stories which won the Vogel Award for an unpublished manuscript, and provided him with the opportunity to publish with a major publishing house. This was followed by his first novel, The Hand That Signed the Paper, in 1995. It was shortlisted for numerous awards including the Miles Franklin Literary Award, and went on to be a bestseller.

Since then, Griffiths has released a number of books, including several nonfiction works. His 2011 book, Watermark, won the Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Nonfiction and was widely praised for its examination of the impact of climate change on water and the natural environment. His 2014 novel The Good People is a multi-generational saga set in the Scottish Highlands which won the Nib Literary Award for Fiction and was longlisted for the Miles Franklin Award.

Tom Griffiths’ most recent work is Talking to the Moon (2019), a novel set in 1930s Europe which explores the consequences of intolerance and hate. It was shortlisted for the Stella Prize and the Prime Minister’s Literary Award. As a passionate conservationist, Griffiths has also written and presented several documentaries, books and essays specifically related to environmental issues.

Tom Griffiths is currently based in Melbourne, where he continues to write and promote social justice, responsible environmental practice and sustainability. A dedicated environmentalist, Griffiths is a recipient of the Sydney Peace Prize, and has given numerous talks and interviews in Australia and abroad.
