Warren Ellis

Warren Ellis is an English novelist, comic book writer, and graphic novel author known for his unique plot twists and cutting-edge stories. He specializes in mixing genres, combining science fiction, horror, and fantasy to create stories that take unexpected turns. Ellis started his career in the early ’90s writing for various British comic-book publishers and small press outlets. He quickly rose to prominence as a key player in the British comic book industry and as one of the major voices of the “Great British Wave” of comic book writers.

Ellis has written extensively for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Image Comics, Avatar Press, and WildStorm Comics. He is best known for writing multiple popular series including the series Planetary and Transmetropolitan; and for creating the X-Men character Fantomex, the Authority’s Jenny Sparks, and the WildC.A.T.s’ Grifter. He's also written a number of non-fiction books, including Crooked Little Vein, have Noir and the non-fiction personal scrapbook Come In Alone. In addition to these projects, Ellis’s work has been featured in numerous comics-related publications, including Wizard magazine and Variety.

In his writing, Ellis showcases his talent for crafting complex stories and characters. He often features a mix of genres that read like a science fiction, dystopian, and horror novel wrapped in one. His stories often traverse the boundaries of multiple universes, making his larger works like Planetary and Transmetropolitan stand out from the rest. In addition to his work on comic books and graphic novels, Ellis has also penned a number of novels, including Crooked Little Vein, Gun Machine, Dead Pig Collector, and Normal, which was nominated for an Edgar Award in 2017. An anthology of short stories by Ellis, Loveless, was released in 2018.

Outside of writing, Ellis has also held a variety of comic-related roles. He has worked as the Editorial Consultant for Global Frequency, a DC Comics imprint; and as the Executive Producer for the ill-fated animated series FreakAngels. He currently serves as the Creative Director for the comic book publisher Avatar Press.
