Eunice: The Kennedy Who Changed the World by Eileen McNamara

Eunice: The Kennedy Who Changed the World by Eileen McNamara is the stirring story of an extraordinary and transformational woman.

From her birth in 1921, Eunice Kennedy Shriver was wired differently from the other seven Kennedy children–discerning and determined, she understood that her mission in life was to make a lasting difference. The only daughter of Joseph P. and Rose Kennedy, she grew up in a powerful and dynamic family. No matter how many times her parents asserted that, “You’re nothing but a girl” to their daughter, Eunice was determined to break out of the traditional roles expected of her.

Eunice was the catalyst that spurred her brothers and sisters to greatness. She even pushed her beloved architect brother John through the doorway of politics, leading to his election to the White House. As a discerning leader, Eunice carefully plotted her own path, breaking through gender and class boundaries.

When her beloved sister Rosemary was institutionalized, Eunice was determined to prove that intellectual disabilities could be treated and managed, not hidden away or hidden from public view. From that, Eunice created numerous programs for individuals with disabilities, and with her Special Olympics in 1968, she revolutionized the way people with disabilities were treated and accepted.

Eunice and her husband Sargent Shriver represent the best of the 1960s, leading a vibrant and idealism-filled vanguard to advance civil and women's rights, international justice, the Peace Corps, and to erase global hunger. For five decades, Eunice campaigned for human rights, defended the dignity of human life, and raised awareness and money to help those living in poverty.

Throughout her life, Eunice fought against limitations and boundaries of gender, race, and age. Despite failing health in her later years, Eunice's life exemplifies an ever-increasing commitment to the cause of justice, human rights, and the support of those who are in need. She encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue their dreams, no matter what anyone said.

Eunice: The Kennedy Who Changed the World by Eileen McNamara is a remarkable story of progress and change, ambition and determination, and a lasting legacy of hope she left behind. Eunice's legacy continues to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to believe in the power of working together and making a positive difference in the world. Her story is an important reminder to never give up—no matter what.
