"Kidnapped" by Robert Louis Stevenson is a classic adventure novel and one of the greatest works of literature of all time. Published in 1886, "Kidnapped" is a stirring tale of Highlanders and Lowlanders during the turbulent and exciting times of Scotland during the Jacobite Rebellion. Set in the late 17th century and early 18th century, this thrilling adventure chronicles the adventures and hijinks of young David Balfour as he attempts to reclaim birthright of his family’s estate in the Scotland highlands.
The story begins with David Balfour, a young Scottish lad, who is being sent to work for his uncle Ebenezer by his father. Before departing, however, he learns that his father died at sea and that Ebenezer may or may not have something to do with it; this quandary sets the stage for David's conflict and eventual retrieval of his inheritance.
Upon reaching the home of his Uncle Ebenezer, David is treated with disdain and made to do the hard chores around the house. But David is not one to be put down; he discovers papers in his uncle's room showing evidence of his father's death at sea and that Ebenezer had a hand in it. Eventually, David is captured and sold as a slave by Ebenezer, setting in motion the great adventure of the novel.
David is quickly rescued by a jovial German sea captain named Wass, and the two of them set off together on his ship. From here, the story follows David and Wass as they join the rebels of the Jacobite Rebellion and attempt to win the return of the exiled King James Stuart. The remainder of the book follows the exciting journey of David and Wass, as they battle pirates, exchange swordplay, and pursue their mission. Along the way, they are aided by the Scottish outlaw Alan Breck Stewart and his allies, who help them in their attempt to overthrow Ebenezer.
The novel deftly combines action, adventure, romance, and humor to create a powerful narrative about one man's quest for justice and his search for his rightful home. In a sense, the novel is also a study of social class and the struggles between Highlanders and Lowlanders, as well as between rebels and loyalists. It is a meditation on honor and how even one small act can affect the world around us. The novel contains a complex network of characters and relationships while still managing to remain incredibly accessible.
"Kidnapped" is truly a remarkable novel which fills the reader with excitement, anticipation, and wonder. It is a classic adventure that continues to entertain readers to this day and is surely a must-read for anyone interested in classic literature.
