When the power struggle between the warlords reaches its climax, Blackthorne must choose a side and fight. He rallies a few loyal followers with the intention of helping Toranaga, but in the end, his efforts are in vain. Toranaga is defeated and sent into exile.
Blackthorne is eventually able to return to England and reunites with his beloved Mariko. The triumphal ending shows that love and loyalty can conquer all, no matter where you come from or who you are.
