Richard Powers' 2006 novel The Echo Maker is a story of family, love and healing, set in the fictional Nebraska town of Platte City. The protagonist of the novel is thirty-two year old Mark Schluter, a young man who is suffering from a mysterious neurological disorder known as Capgras Syndrome.

Eventually, with the help of Dr. Witten and a determined young physician named Dr. Lyle Petersen, Mark is diagnosed with Capgras Syndrome—a rare affliction in which an individual will not recognize the familiarity of family and friends due to sensory overload or brain injury—and begins a slow road to recovery. Along the way, the relationships among Mark, Karin, and Dr. Witten become increasingly integrated, leading up to the long awaited moment when Mark is finally able to recognize his own sister.
