The Famished Road by Ben Okri

Ben Okri’s novel The Famished Road offers readers a powerful,
blast into the life of an African child in the mystical African desert and their arduous journey of life. The novel puts into words the vivid and often tragic lives of those living in an impoverished and war-torn country, and weaves a story that touches upon the cultural, spiritual, and political aspects of the Nigerian landscape.

The novel follows the life of a young boy, Azaro, from his birth to his eventual adulthood. Azaro is a spirit child, born with supernatural powers and the ability to see the unseen world. He is taken from the slums of Lagos, Nigeria to the world of Abụ, the spiritual realm of the desert. Throughout his journey, Azaro is forced to face the spiritual forces of the desert and how they conflict between the human and spirit world.

The Famished Road uses elements of African mythology and African spiritualism, such as faith healing, as well as elements of magical realism to tell its story. Through Azaro’s eyes, we learn of the conflict between good and evil, and how this conflict is rooted in both physical and spiritual imbalance.

The novel follows Azaro’s struggle as he learns how to use his powers to help his family and those around him. He is able to use his powers to heal injuries, ease pain, end poverty and suffering in his village, and to even keep away the evil spirits that are preying on his family. He is aided in his journey by the mysterious and wise spirit guide, Madame Koto, who guides him through the fearsome dangers of the spirit world and provides him with guidance and protection.

As he learns about the deep rooted history and suffering embedded in this world, Azaro must ultimately reconcile his love for the human world with his place in the spirit world. He is faced with a difficult decision between embracing this new reality and his loyalty to his family and members of his community. Ultimately, Azaro’s journey of discovery is one of self-realization and understanding, a journey he embarks on propelled by his courage and his powerful inner strength.

Having faced serious societal and personal struggles, Azaro is able to entwine his past suffering and experiences to come through his many struggles and learn how to live in harmony with both the spiritual and human world. Through his experiences, Azaro develops the courage to step forward and confront the evils that are threatening his community, and ultimately his courage pays off as a socio-political and spiritual reconciliation is reached.

The Famished Road is an intense and captivating story of personal and political struggle combined with elements of magic and African mysticism. Through Azaro’s journey, we are presented with a unique viewpoint of the African culture, one that is at times heartbreaking and inspirational. The story is one of hope and reconciliation and ultimately, of triumph. Ben Okri’s The Famished Road is not just an engaging book, but a powerful and emotional look into an entirely different and sometimes forbidding cultural landscape.
