Throughout their time on the island, the castaways experience magical events such as sudden earthquakes, floods and heavy fog.

The castaways ultimately learn that the island is part of a lost continent and what once was their home is now swallowed up by the ocean. The final chapters of the book pay homage to the resilience of the human spirit, as the castaways find comfort in the knowledge that their discoveries bring about a new understanding of the world that can improve their lives.
