Despite these strange oddities, the castaways begin to explore the island and eventually stumble upon an old man who reveals some of the secrets of the island’s past.

The castaways gradually unravel the secret that the island was once inhabited by an advanced civilization that explored it’s magical powers. With the help of the island’s magician, they learn how to use these powers to build their own utopia. With the magician’s help, the castaways are able to transform their humble abode into a modern city. Throughout their time on the island, the castaways experience magical events such as sudden earthquakes, floods and heavy fog.

The castaways ultimately learn that the island is part of a lost continent and what once was their home is now swallowed up by the ocean. The final chapters of the book pay homage to the resilience of the human spirit, as the castaways find comfort in the knowledge that their discoveries bring about a new understanding of the world that can improve their lives.
