The Sweetness of Water by Nathan Harris

For those who have read Nathan Harris’ The Sweetness of Water, it will come as no surprise that it is a book of immense beauty, gently leading us into a new understanding of life. Published in 2009, the story begins in a small village in Ethiopia, where a young Kenana is given the task of fetching water. His journey to the well is normal enough, until he notices something strange, a sweet-tasting water. What follows is an incredible experience, as Kenana discovers a hidden world of miracles and magical creatures.

Throughout his journey, Kenana learns of a prophecy that can change the fate of his village, and thus Kenana embarks on a quest to fulfill it. Along the way, he experiences numerous challenges and challenges from both natural and supernatural entities. He also finds solace and friendship in the various characters he meets on his journey, all of whom teach him valuable lessons about facing the unknown.

Although the journey is full of danger, the experiences that Kenana faces bring peace, love, and understanding to his life. This is thanks, in part, to the magical creatures Kenana meets: water sprites, tree spirits, and Musialamu, a beautiful creature that looks like a giraffe but is actually something more. These characters, who often aid and support Kenana, provide him with glimpses into the power of nature, and how humans and nature can work together.

Kenana’s struggle is not always successful, and he often faces moments of doubt and confusion. However, throughout his journey he continues to strive toward his goal, believing in the power of the prophecy, and the sweet taste of the water. By relying on his courage and trusting his intuition, he perseveres, eventually bringing peace to his village.

The writing of Nathan Harris is at all times beautiful and powerful. He brings to life the lushness of the African landscape, the warmth of its inhabitants, and the mysterious power of the water, which has sustained and nurtured the village for generations. Through Kenana’s journey, Harris speaks to the power of believing in something greater, and of finding solace and strength even in difficult moments.

The Sweetness of Water is a story of courage and hope, of faith in the power of nature, and of the rewards that can come from facing the unknown. It is a delightful, insightful, and deeply touching book that will stay with its readers long after the last page is read.
