Alan Sugar
Alan Sugar is a British entrepreneur, author, and politician who has achieved fame and success from a wide range of business ventures. He is perhaps best known for founding the electronics company Amstrad, which set him on the path to becoming one of the wealthiest people in the UK. Sugar took his success to the small screen in 2007 with his TV series 'The Apprentice', during which time he has had various other projects including a series of books he has authored.
Sugar was born in 1947 in Hackney, East London to first-generation Jewish immigrants from Poland. In spite of coming from an economically nonprivileged background, Sugar managed to channel his ambition and work extremely hard at school, eventually achieving 11 O-levels and 2 A-levels in maths and physics. Having developed an aptitude for entrepreneurial pursuits, Sugar began his first electronics business, Alan Michael Sugar Trading, in 1968 at the age of 21.
The business focused on importing and selling car audio equipment that was sourced from major Far Eastern manufacturers and sold under the Amstrad brand. Through sales and marketing prowess, Sugar grew this business to a public company in 1980 and floated it on the stock exchange shortly thereafter. This was an incredible feat and put Sugar on the path to success that he had always dreamed of.
Sugar wrote several successful books about his life and career and his successes as an entrepreneur. His first book, ‘What You See Is What You Get’, was published in 2013, and was an autobiographical look at his meteoric rise to prominence in the business world. In it, he shares anecdotes and advice from his professional life, from being fired from his job at a young age to learning the key elements of setting up and running a successful business.
The second book Sugar wrote, ‘Gumption: Taking The Initiative’, was published in 2015. The book takes a slightly different approach, expanding on the themes of active risk management and proactive decision-making, making sure to cover both the heart and soul of entrepreneurship. It further talks about overcoming different kinds of hardships and failures, and how those can be used as stepping stones to furthering success.
Sugar's third book, ‘The Way I See It: Business, Technology, and Ethics’, was published in 2017 and is written in a more philosophical vein, offering a critical and ethical take on technology, business, and success. It talks about the role of morality in business decision-making and how prudent risk-taking and honest actions can lead to long-term success in the corporate world.
More recently, Sugar authored his fourth book, ‘Leadership and Growth in Today’s World’. This book contains Sugar's views on the digital transformation of industry and how to capitalize on the opportunities that come with it. It tackles the importance of leadership and the necessity of taking ownership while simultaneously providing readers with hard-hitting advice on how to approach difficult situations.
Alan Sugar is truly a living legend and his books offer readers invaluable insights into how to be a successful entrepreneur and benevolent leader. The books he has written capture both his life story and his vi sion for the future, allowing us to learn from him and his many successes.
