Christian Blees first foray into writing was fiction, releasing his debut novel in 2004; it was entitled 'Rememory.' The story follows the plight of an elderly woman who is struggling to come to terms with the guilt she feels over taking the life of her own mother. The novel goes on to explore themes of regret, love, redemption and hope. It was a well-received novel, making Blees an author of note in the literary world.
He has gone on to further explore the themes explored in 'Rememory' in subsequent writings, including college textbooks and poetry. In 2007, Blees wrote a significant piece of his thesis which he turned into a collection titled 'Being Bilingual.' This compilation explores the impact bilingualism has on identity, with Blees drawing upon his personal experience living in Germany. It wasn't until the release of his most recent work in 2017, 'From Curiosity to Connection', that Blees ventured into non-fiction.
Blees' writing has been published in numerous journals, and has been featured in a variety of media outlets. His work has been highly praised. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Junot Diaz described his writing as being filled with powerful imagery, saying it “blends the lyrical and the factual in ways that are both beautiful and thought-provoking.” In 2012, Blees was one of the 12 authors featured in the New York Times Book Review’s “Best Books of the Year”.
In addition to his writing and teaching commitments, Blees is also a contributing editor for several magazines and journals. As a result, Blees is often asked to review books, which he does in a unique and highly-regarded style. He also provides editorial feedback on works-in-progress.
Alongside his writing and academic commitments, Blees is a philanthropist and human rights supporter. He is involved in several organisations that work to promote and defend asylum seekers, and is also a regular at fundraisers and charity events.
Christian Blees’s writing is direct, often deeply emotional, and carefully researched. His works examine personal and societal issues in depth, and often blend both fact and fiction. With the publication of each work, Blees continues to increase his acclaim, proving himself to be one of the finest authors of his generation.
