Don A. Moore is an American scientist, writer, and educator best known for his work in the fields of strategy, decision-making, and holistic thinking. He has authored numerous books, articles, and research studies in these areas, often crossing the boundaries between academia and the business world.
The son of a successful businessman, Moore was born in California and grew up on the East Coast, where he completed his undergraduate degree in physics at Williams College. He went on to receive a Master's in public policy from NYU, followed by a Ph.D. in decision analysis from Stanford. Even before finishing his Ph.D., Moore was already highly sought-after for his innovative thinking, and served for years as a lecturer and then an adjunct professor at Stanford.
Moore is the co-founder and director of the Berkeley Decision Group, a research center focused on the study of decision-making and strategy. He has also served on the Board of Trustees at the Santa Fe Institute, and as a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford.
Moore’s approach to decision-making, strategy, and holistic thinking has been highly influential. In The Hindsight Bias (2000), he identifies the “hindsight bias” – the tendency of people to think they know more than they do – and suggests ways to prevent it. His other books, including The Tactics of Change: Doing Things Right in a World Gone Wrong (2008) and Thinking Strategically: A Primer for Managers and Business Professionals (2016), provide readers with practical strategies to make better decisions, think systematically, and foster a culture of creativity and innovation.
In addition to his work in the field of strategy and decision-making, Moore is also known as a powerful advocate of education reform. Through his work as an educator and a scholar, he has helped catalyze changes in the way that students and educators think about learning and creativity. Moore believes that everyone has the potential to learn and achieve and that education should help to bring out the best in each individual. His book Navigating Change: How To Think Like an Entrepreneur and Transform Your Life (2016) is a powerful testament to his commitment to education reform.
Moore’s influence extends beyond the pages of his books and into the lives of the many people he has advised over the years. He has worked as an adviser and mentor to young entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs in the making, and high-profile executives who are looking to make a difference in the world. He has also been actively involved in various philanthropic endeavors, including helping to found the Moore Foundation, which works to support communities and individuals who are often overlooked by the mainstream.
Throughout his career, Moore has been widely recognized for his work on strategy, decision-making, and education reform. In 2018, he was awarded the McKinsey Award for “best body of work” on creating value – reflecting his commitment to helping individuals and organizations make better decisions and achieve success.
