Her life changed dramatically when she met a college professor who shared her interest for writing. After graduating from college, Joiner took a job as a technical writer, with the goal of using her skills to make a living from writing.

Over the years, Joiner has become known for her thought-provoking stories that captivate readers from all walks of life. Her books feature prominently themes of hope, love, and friendship. Joiner’s Young Adult novel Life Unlabeled, which released in 2017, follows the story of Allie, a teen who is trying to find her place in the world. Life Unlabeled's themes of family and identity resonated with a large audience, proving that Joiner is able to weave unique and relatable stories.

Joiner’s work often involves recurring motifs, such as the use of animals and other creatures as guides or companions in stories. Meanwhile, in Another Bad Day at Black Rock, an unlikely group of animals works together to save the world from being consumed by a corrupt scientist.

In 2018, Joiner released My First World, a picture book that introduces children of all ages to different cultures around the world. As a way to inspire young readers, she donated half of the profits from this book to The World Bank.
