Marcus Buckingham

Marcus Buckingham is an international best-selling author and renowned expert in the fields of science and psychology. His work looks at leadership, personal effectiveness, and employee engagement and has been extremely influential in motivating and inspiring people around the world.

Buckingham was born in Britain in 1966 and graduated with a degree in modern history from Worcester College, Oxford. He later received a PhD in psychology at London’s Royal Holloway College. While he was at Royal Holloway, Buckingham wrote his first book, First, Break All The Rules (1999), which was co-authored with Curt Coffman. The book was a New York Times bestseller that sold millions of copies and is still considered a must-read for anyone interested in the field of employee motivation and personal development.

Following the success of First, Break All The Rules, Buckingham went on to author several other well-known books, including Now, Discover Your Strengths (2001), Go Put Your Strengths to Work (2007), and StandOut: The Groundbreaking New Strengths Assessment from the Leader in the Science of Strength (2011). All of these books focus on the Strengths Finder, which Buckingham developed from his research in the field of psychology and employee motivation. According to Buckingham, in order for employees to be successful and feel fulfilled, they must determine and understand their individual strengths. He explains that “once we understand our strengths, they can turn into our true source of motivation and success.”

Buckingham’s work and ideas have been widely praised and accepted by business leaders and CEOs around the world. He has served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Marcus Buckingham Company and was an early leader of Gallup’s Strength-Based Leadership research and development group. He has consulted with some of the largest and most successful organizations, including Microsoft and LinkedIn, and has even served as a speaker on the topic of employee engagement and motivation at the World Economic Forum.
