Norman Russell was born in 1935 in Manchester, England. He attended Manchester Grammar School and studied law at the University of Manchester, graduating in 1959. He then pursued a law career and became a barrister. After a few years, he changed his path and pursued a full-time writing career.

Norman Russell's first book, The Seventh Shrine, was published in 1970, and was an instant success among readers. The novel follows a priest as he searches for the seventh shrine of a hidden god. In the process, he finds himself embroiled in a struggle for power between the ancient god and an unbeliever.

Norman Russell continued to write a broad range of books, including fantasy and historical fiction. His most famous work is the Coldigan Chronicles, which is a series of fantasy novels set in a mythical kingdom. Throughout the series, he explores themes of faith, love, and the human condition. The series is composed of six volumes:

• Shores of Shadow Fires
• The Council of Blades
• Return of the Exile

In addition to the Coldigan Chronicles, Norman Russell also wrote stand-alone novels such as Witch Blood, Blood Red Horse, and Firestarter, as well as short stories and poetry. He was particularly well known for his works of social commentary, such as Animal Riot, which explore life in the inner cities of England.
