Temporal was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, the city where he remains to this day. He began writing professionally at the age of nineteen, in 1984, and his first mature fantasy novel, 'The Equinox Gates' was published in 1996. His debut novel introduced Temporal's readers to his vivid imagination and ability to explore the depths of the characters. He continues to work on a variety of novel genres and his work continually evokes complex emotions and situations.
His two most successful works, 'The Oracle' and 'The Prisoner', were both published in 2004 and followed the story of an imprisoned young girl and her eventual release into the outside world. In both pieces, Temporal examines the transition between captivity and freedom, and further extends his exploration of the psychological aspects of his characters. Both works were praised for their story arcs, vivid imagination and attention to the minutiae of Temporal’s characters thoughts, actions and reasoning.
In 2008, Temporal introduced his audience to ‘The Tower of Silence’ which proved to be a more complex work than his previous two books. Here, he introduces a cast of troubled characters that inhabit a strange and otherworldly castle that resides on an island at the edge of the ocean. The characters in the book are all searching for a way to escape their captivity and in the process explore new facets of themselves and learn the secrets of the castle.
Temporal’s 2010 effort, 'A Darkness Before Dawn', positioned him as a more complete writer; his characters are much more vivid than before, the darkness and soaring beauty of the imagery is far more palpable and the story is much darker and more thrilling. This book once again dealt with the psychological issues of its protagonists, particularly the role of suffering and death, and the process of resurrection.
Temporal’s most recent work, in 2012, is ‘Origin’, and here Temporal combines his ever increasing writing ability with the subject matter of his previous books. Here, Temporal investigates the mental anguish of his characters set against a fantastical world and their own inner struggles for freedom. Amongst his other works, 'Origin' stands out for its unusual structure and pace, and further examines the psychological elements of Temporal’s richly empathetic characters.
