Ram Charan
Ram Charan is one of the most successful business thinkers of the 21st century. He has written many books, consulted and advised many of the world’s top organizations, and has inspired and guided leaders from more than 50 countries. He has also been awarded many honorary degrees and medals and been named one of the most influential international business thinkers by Harvard Business Review, The Economist, and The Financial Times.
Born in India, Charan enrolled in the Indian Air Force and served as an officer in 1958. After leaving the service and seeing first-hand the incredible challenges of turning around troubled businesses, he returned to college and earned his MBA and PhD in business. He then moved to the US, teaching business and leading executive programs at prominent universities and business schools.
Charan has written 20 books which have been published in 40 languages and more than 60 million copies have been sold. His first major book, Corporate Turnaround, published in 1983, explains how to turn around financially troubled companies and was an instant best seller.
Throughout the 1980s and '90s, Charan published more groundbreaking books on how to lead a business, how to be a respected leader, and how to anticipate and manage change, among many other topics. He has developed a unique way of selecting and developing corporate leaders who, according to Charan, must have both vision and courage in order to succeed. Charan’s books and programs have made him an international sensation, and people from all over the world consult his advice on a variety of business topics.
Charan’s most recent work, Leaders at All Levels: Deepening Your Talent Pool to Solve the Succession Crisis, explains how organizations can identify and develop the leadership talent they need to survive. This 2019 book also describes the “Triple A Theory of Leadership”, which stands for accountability, agility, and authenticity. He argues that all leaders must have these three traits, in addition to a deep understanding of their own capabilities.
Charan has also written about the impact of technology on our global economy and how companies can harness its potential to create a competitive edge. He focuses on the fact that companies must use data to create an informed decision-making process. This can lead to better customer experiences and increased organizational efficiency.
Charan’s latest book, Turnaround: How to Transform Your Dragging Organization Into a High-Performance Team, was published in 2020. In it, Charan outlines his method of transforming a struggling organization into a successful one.
