Scott McCloud
Scott McCloud is a distinguished figure in the world of comics, known for his ability to communicate difficult concepts in a simple but effective way. His career spans more than two decades, and through his work, he has earned a reputation as one of the most important writers and artists in the medium of comics.
McCloud was born in 1960 in Massachusetts and began drawing comic books and cartoons in his teens. In 1983, he released his first book, The Art of Comics, which examined the anatomy of comic books, the symbolic elements of cartoon drawing, and the history of comics from a global perspective. The book received critical acclaim and, as a result, he was invited to lecture at universities, museums, and various other institutions.
In 1994, McCloud released Understanding Comics, a sequel to The Art of Comics. Here, McCloud used comics to explain various concepts in an engaging and accessible manner. McCloud followed up the success of Understanding Comics with Zot! which was published in 1997 and tells the story of a teen superhero trying to protect the Earth from evil aliens. Zot! was well-received but garnered less attention than his previous two works.
In the early 2000s, McCloud released Reinventing Comics, a book that examined the changing landscape of the comic industry and how technology had impacted the medium. The book offered an insight into the new tools, platforms, and methods that were becoming increasingly commonplace in comic books and the entertainment world. In his next book, Making Comics, McCloud demonstrates his own unique style of cartooning by sharing tips, stories, and insight into the day-to-day process of creating comics.
McCloud's most recent book is The Sculptor, which was published in 2015 and tells the story of an artist who, in order to make his mark, makes a deal with Death. The Sculptor is widely considered to be McCloud’s masterpiece, and was nominated for both the Eisner Award and the National Book Award.
